Velvet Buzzsaw wants to be a satire of the shallow, nose-in-the-air modern art scene and a supernatural thriller — and I believe a movie in that vein could be done effectively — but it doesn’t deliver on either fronts.

Velvet Buzzsaw has a genuinely strong premise: the contemporary art world as the setting for a venomous satire mixed with horror. The problem is that the film never turns that idea into something as sharp or memorable as it should be. For a while it works, especially when it mocks snobbery, ego, and the way art becomes business and empty pose. Visually it is striking, with recognizable faces and a style that wants to feel bizarre and sophisticated, but most of it comes across as posture rather than real inspiration. The cast does what it can, yet the film never makes you care enough, either as satire or as horror. In the end it feels like a wasted opportunity: a good idea trapped inside a film with no real soul and very little staying power.

It was a different movie compared to everything else Pretty boring movie until the last half, which was a bit less boring. I like what they were going for, but it took too long to get there.

i loved this movie. lets be clear this is not a very good movie but the absolute goofiness of art monkeys killing a dude is worth 4 stars. the world is interesting and the acting is fantastic the writing is goofy as fuck but in my opinion it just makes it more fun.

Pretty good movie, does require a commitment. The actors are dialed in and dialogue is strong. Plus you get to see reunion of Jake and Rene with Gilroy.

Brilliant performances by Jake and Renee and all other cast members. Great tongue-in-cheek commentary on the art world in this facet. A old man dies and is found by an administrator for the high end Haze Art Gallery owned by Renee Russo. The artist wanted his work destroyed but after being reviewed by art expert Jake Gyllenhaal as brilliant and new the greed of the Art world takes hold and there’s hell to pay for all participants! Highly recommended! Great performances also by John Malkovich, Natalie Dyer, Zawe Ashton and Toni Collette!
