Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review

The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

War Machine is spoiled by a severe lack of tension and while literally everyone is on the table for the slaughter, the kills by this extraterrestrial lifeform become repetitive before it even begins… Go to Full Review

While thankfully this is no Battlefield Earth, Battle: Los Angeles or Battleship, War Machine doesn’t really offer up many surprising beats as a fairly predictable scenario plays out. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

Jay L. @Jay.Livin 4h This film started out strong but feel flat about halfway through. It has some emotional moments but it lacks an in depth storyline. 81 saving his crew was a good plot to go off of but we didn’t know anything about the entire crew besides the fact that 7 knew 81’s brother and 15 liked conspiracy theories. I would’ve liked to grow sort of attachment to the other characters so their deaths were more meaningful in a way because I felt nothing when most of the crew died. I actually laughed when 15 died and he somehow threw the ammo right into 81’s arms. The alien plot also feel flat, it would’ve been great to get some more info on them or why they came to earth. The ending just left me with a bunch of questions. See more Jimmy C. @RT52860396 14h I loved this movie! See more Ry N. @RyGuy 2d Ranger trainees run into an alien War Machine during a training exercise. This movie definitely has Predator vibes. See more Brighton N @RT09904023 2d War Machine has a strong start that's surprisingly emotional. Yet, it decrescendos into a whimper as it yet again proves that Netflix will continue to put out lame four-quadrant, low-hanging-fruit action-fests for years to come... and will also continue to forget to put anything in the films that makes them worth checking out. Check out my more in-depth review at The Reel Ranker by searching "War Machine" ;) See more Elisha I @asapidox 3d Pure action chaos in the best way. The pacing barely slows down, the machine combat is intense, and Alan Ritchson absolutely fits this kind of role perfectly. It’s not trying to be deep sci-fi — it just wants to be loud, fun, and entertaining, and it totally works.
