See more Richard G @RT44676617 Sep 22 Be patient. Like walkng in the woods. Just take it in slowly. A man who's missed his bus innocently takes a place to sleep for the night in a house in a large pit in the dunes. The villages wont let him escape. He is trapped in the house with its sole resident, a woman who spnds her her life digging sand to keep her house from being buried. He struggles against his fate for much of the film while she patiently points out how to survive. It reminds me of what I think Sartre means by "No Exit" & the solution is love and acceptance. But mine are just words. The film makes you feel this. If you think the continual sand is a metaphor, choose whatever you will for what the metaphor is of (sorry). I thnk it is cheap and simplistic to see it as a metaphor for the "meaningless of work in a capitalist society". The majority of people work at dull jobs in most societies, save maybe hunter gatherers, who die when there is no game.
