Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

At this point, Dark Winds is already doing variations on its own themes. But they're good themes, and interesting variations. Change can be overrated sometimes, when you're already good at what you do.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been watching from the beginning or just tuning in for this season, Dark Winds is the best hidden gem TV show of 2026 so far, and it’s hard to imagine another show unseating its traditional structure and innovative story.

While the fourth season of Dark Winds is taking a chance by going off the rez, seeing Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito facing big changes brings interesting context to what might be normally be considered a standard police thriller case.

If old Sundance [Robert Redford] was still kicking, he’d surely approve of this new season because it’s a fitting homage to his ‘70s heyday and builds upon the gritty, rollickingly adventurous tone of that bygone era.

I loved the first season of this series, but each season gets weirder and further away from legitimate Navajo culture. The throwing in of a death hogan feels gratuitous, especially with no explanation of what that means. The extremely fine actors are clunky and stiff. One scene is Chee watching the chief and his partner through a window for an ungodly length of time. The idea that the young man could live with a chest wound, much less drive is ridiculous. People are fearful of criticizing Native American shows but they should be subject to the same scrutiny. Perhaps I feel this way because I have spent so much time on the Navajo nation, and the Mescalero reserve. I decided not to watch after the first episode but thought I was being unfair so tuned in for the second. Too bad this site doesn't have an eyeroll emoji.
