Eddie and the Cruisers, a major rock 'n' roll band in the early '60s, fell off the radar when singer Eddie (Michael Paré) vanished after a dispute over their experimental second album. Nearly 20 years later, journalist Maggie Foley (Ellen Barkin) tracks down the old Cruisers to see if she can unravel the secret of Eddie's disappearance. By piecing together the band members' stories, she hopes to find the missing master tapes to the lost LP, and also solve the mystery of Eddie's ultimate fate.

At the height of his fame, Eddie Wilson died in a car crash. Or did he? The question, raised in the opening scenes, gives this fictional, nostalgic movie a quirky appeal, suggesting the past may not be dead after all. Go to Full Review

Aside from Eddie And The Cruisers' funky structure, the music remains its chief selling point-though Cafferty's songs don't plausibly pass for early 1960s tunes. Go to Full Review

Eddie and the Cruisers is a mish-mash of a film, combining elements of the ongoing nostalgia for rock music of previous decades with an unworkable and laughable mystery plotline. Go to Full Review

The film's mystery angle regarding the missing tapes is ludicrous, thus making it right at home alongside every other half-witted development in this cheesy undertaking. Go to Full Review

Review of a disk containing Eddie and the Cruisers I and II: The music (created by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band) provides good support in both films. There is an uncanny convergence of the stories of the fictional movie band and the real one. Go to Full Review

Matt L @Mattliptak 4d Stellar, often-overlooked gem. Eddie and the Cruisers remains one of the most unfairly dismissed films of its era. Michael Paré delivers what is arguably one of the best lip-sync performances ever, convincingly channeling John Cafferty’s vocals without breaking the illusion. The cast is rock solid across the board—Tom Berenger brings gravitas, Ellen Barkin adds edge and attitude, Joe Pantoliano is memorable as always, and Paré anchors it with brooding charisma. The story is engaging, atmospheric, and far more compelling than critics ever gave it credit for. Long hated by reviewers, it’s aged remarkably well, and its arrival on streaming is a welcome chance for new audiences to rediscover a film that deserves far more respect than it ever received. See more Joel H Jan 11 If Eddie and the Cruisers is all about rock and roll, why does it feel so sleepy? Instead of an up-tempo story about the rise and fall of a fictional band, this movie hits cruise control and slowly meanders on the planned route you expect it to (with one very odd exception at the end). This movie is like an album with one great song, followed by a bunch of average tracks you don’t really care about. And they do play a lot of songs to fill the runtime. I’m sorry, Eddie and the Cruisers, but I think I’ll catch a ride with another film the next time I get the urge to watch a melodramatic musical drama. I noticed that it was going to be on TCM this past weekend, so I decided to watch it. Hoo boy, what a stinker! Tom Berenger, Ellen Barkin, Joey Pants--I forgive you. I guess you all have to start somewhere. See more Allison M @AllisonMarlow Sep 22 Great movie! Outstanding music! Instant classic. I've loved it and the sequel, Eddie Lives (aka Eddie and the Cruisers II) since I first saw it on cable in the '80s. Too bad it's not shown on any streaming services. Michael Paré gives a great interview. See more Keith S Aug 26 I love this movie. I have the VHS, CD, Blue Ray and streaming is how much. Not to mention the great sound track. Michael Pare turns in a great performance as the rocker trying to remain true to the music, while Tom Berenger plays the great "coming of age" college kid looking back... See more kevenquinlan May 3 See the Popcornmeter= that's about what most people feel about it. An instant classic. An easy add to your collection. Any negative review probably was from another era. Saw, like most, on HBO and watched repeatedly. It's 2025 and just caught it again, first time in over 30 years- just as good as it always was. I think you have to be able to stick yourself in the 'time' of a movie to enjoy it. I can watch a Dirty Harry movie and like it even though, by todays standards, it pales to other movies but I can put myself in the era when the movie was made. I seem to find a lot of the negative reviews on here are by young to middle aged people who have no frame of reference and simply CAN'T do that. If you're late 40's and up= you'll enjoy this and most of the popcornmeter are probably in that age range. If I was 20 and just watched it, I'd probably laugh at how awful and boring it is, hahaha. I get it- but it's a great movie if you were there when it was. See more Read all reviews
