The story centers on an uncle and niece, and the sexualized dynamics are awkward and unsettling, making the film difficult to enjoy. As a child, it was just silly and attention-grabbing for its nudity, but grown-up viewing highlights how misguided the screenplay choices were. Michael Caine delivers a professional performance as always, but even his talent cannot redeem the film’s strange, inappropriate tone. The infamous song "Blame It on Rio" remains catchy and nostalgic, yet it cannot distract from the unease of the story. The pacing and character motivations feel off, leaving little emotional investment, and the humor often misses its mark entirely. Overall, the film is awkward, poorly handled, and not something worth revisiting under any circumstances. See more keith r @Rossy Jan 13 Recently rewatched Blame It on Rio, a film I first saw back in the 1980s. It was a very different time, and back then it was simply seen as a comedy. As 15-year-old guy, there was plenty to like, and nobody really stopped to think too deeply about it. Watching it again now, through a modern lens, it’s clear why people would say the relationship between Matthew and Jennifer is all wrong, and that’s a shame because it inevitably changes how the film is received today. You can bet that at the time of its release, hardly anyone was considering the implications of that relationship in the way we do now. Context matters. While it’s fair to acknowledge that it hasn’t aged well in certain respects, it’s also worth enjoying the film for what it was, and what it represented in its era. The stupid "helpless" male that doesn't have enough maturity and sense to defend himself against a teenage girl is a ridiculous fantasy.
