See more 10/29/2014 This movie is about card counters, not about card counting. It chronicles a group young white dudes introduced by their pastor and their troubled rise to card counting glory. With the silent cameraman, some parts of the movie feel like The Office would if it were a serious movie about super Christian card counters. The most interesting thing about Holy Rollers is how the characters' faith affects the way they run and expand their operation. They almost all Christians who met through the church, and their shared faith forms the basis of them trusting each other with vast amounts of money. They and their families all question whether playing blackjack is really moral. When they fire the only non-believer from the team, we see them struggle to explain, to each other and us, why it's good that they are all white Christian men. The camera doesn't offer any conclusions, you are left to find your own. Overall, I wasn't bored for a minute of this movie. It's a fascinating look into a really bizarre group of people. See more 08/01/2014 I'm really not sure how I feel about "Holy Rollers." Christianity and gambling don't really mesh and that's why people will actually watch this. Whether it is curiosity, a love for controversial topics, or a desire to judge these guys, it's hard not to be interested in this concept. "Holy Rollers" chronicles a group of pastors and church members who count cards at Blackjack to support themselves as they dedicate the rest of their time to the church. While this group treats gambling as a business, so of the drama that they face seems un-Christian and that's where I get a bit upset with this film. Still, it is really fun to watch these guys camble thousands of dollars as if it was Monopoly money. This movie has a lot of appeal because of its "WHAT?!?!? factor," but realize that these men are portrayed very honestly and you might not always like what you see as their story progresses. I think one of the big things that can be learned from this movie is that if a group of people working together that can truly trust each other can accomplish so much. You can learn a ton about card counting in this super interesting story.
