4/4
Amélie (2001) Hap Erstein It is the feel-good escapist film that most of us need right now, but with a frequent twist of tartness and a cinematic giddiness that intoxicates.

A
Flags of Our Fathers (2006) Hap Erstein Flags of Our Fathers is a complex, contemporary take on a battle that happened more than 60 years ago. It is big, brawny filmmaking, but filled with ideas and questions about then and now.

Y tu mamá también (2001) Hap Erstein In any event, it still plays out like a generic male fantasy without sufficient dramatic motivation.

3.5/4
Moulin Rouge (2001) Hap Erstein John Leguizamo is a wondrously perverse, pint-sized presence as Toulouse-Lautrec.

3/4
Mulholland Dr. (2001) Hap Erstein Mulholland Drive is a twisty, lengthy road, worth cruising into its mysteries.

2.5/4
Wild Things (1998) Hap Erstein The movie equivalent of an airport novel. It entertains, it moves briskly and you can throw it away at the end of the flight, so no one has to know that you indulged yourself.

2/4
The Big Lebowski (1998) Hap Erstein The entire cast jumps headfirst into this strained frivolity, acting as willing accomplices to this intermittently amusing, but ultimately pointless, diversion. The problem is with the Coens' jointly written script, which gets lost in its own tangents.

3/4
Beloved (1998) Hap Erstein As a cerebral ghost story and a bitter slice of history, Beloved is as hard a movie to watch as it is to shake off afterward.

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) Bob Michals If you only see one movie this summer, this is the one you shouldn't miss.

B+
Money (2016) Hap Erstein A violent thriller of captor and captives, with plenty of reversals, adding up to a familiar, but entertaining white knuckle entertainment.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) Hap Erstein The role belongs to Ford, and he is his usual sly self, with dry comic delivery and intrepid air, which was always more important than death-defying acrobatics.

B+
Rocket Science (2007) Hap Erstein Blitz cleverly constructs another tale around a competition and again takes us beneath the surface of those vying for the prize.
Posted Aug 27, 2007Edit critic review
Traffic (2000) Hap Erstein Impressively vast canvas portrait of the futile war on drugs, though lacking anything new on the subject.
Posted Jan 04, 2001Edit critic review
Deep Blue Sea (1999) Hap Erstein Harlin delivers all the thrills, explosive action and sheer gore that audiences have come to expect from the maker of Nightmare on Elm Street IV and Die Hard 2.
