North (1994) Ed Bradley A stylish but ultimately disappointing comedy fantasy from the usually dependable Rob Reiner.

3.5/4
Misery (1990) Ed Bradley Screenwriter William Goldman has provided a rare on-target King adaptation, and Reiner deftly keeps the mood swinging between laughter and suspense.

3/4
The American President (1995) Ed Bradley The leads may bee too squeaky-clean to be totally convincing, and the finale will be too preachy for some, but overall The American President looks like a November winner.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) Ed Bradley The wait is over for Lord of the Rings fans, and The Return of the King has made it all worthwhile.

Stand by Me (1986) Michael Arkush With beautiful sensitivity and intelligent direction, Rob Reiner makes us yearn for a time long gone.

Gaslight (1944) Flint Journal Staff Devilish ingenuity is exercised by Boyer.

3.5/4
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) Ed Bradley The Two Towers suffers slightly from its "middleness" -- there is no real beginning and no real ending... But the visuals are dazzling, the acting dependable and "Rings" devotees will delight in the attention to detail.

4/4
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Ed Bradley It isn't just that The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a quality adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy novel. Heck, it's the year's best adventure film of any kind.

3/4
The Sure Thing (1985) Don Dahlstrom It succeeds largely because of the chemistry between its two likable, attractive, but generally unknown stars, John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga.

3.5/4
A Few Good Men (1992) Ed Bradley Reiner's direction is crisp and straight-forward. With the help of Sorkin...he's turned a series of talky, and potentially boring, scenes (there is almost no real action to speak of) into well-paced, absorbing, highly entertaining drama.

When Harry Met Sally... (1989) Don Dahlstrom Comedian Crystal has many fine moments in an alternately serious role.

2/4
Hook (1991) Ed Bradley The sets and special effects are dazzling, and the costumes are beautiful. But, apparently to justify this obscene expenditure, there's too much of everything -- except visceral satisfaction.

Christine (1983) Christopher Potter Carpenter has sculpted a schlocky original into a flawed work of art, complete with thrills to rattle the most cynical viewer.

3.5/4
The Abyss (1989) Don Dahlstrom In a movie where special effects and high-tech hardware might overpower the characters, the three stars shine as brightly as the NTIs.

3.5/4
True Lies (1994) David Forsmark Cameron usually has an allegory in his films, and whether he effectively makes the point... there is no doubt that the summer movie thrills you're seeking this summer are contained in True Lies. And that's the truth.

4/4
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) David Forsmark This is the best-looking action movie with the most eye-popping special effects in a good long time. It contains not one, but two of the best chase sequences in movie history; and the bad terminator is easily one of the best science fiction baddies ever.

The Running Man (1987) Sheila Beachum "The Running Man" is violent, but there are some truly suspenseful moments.
Posted Nov 06, 2025Edit critic review
Dracula (1979) Daniel A. Koger A well-crafted period piece.

2/4
Casper (1995) David Forsmark This movie needed the touch of a Robert Zemeckis, but even the great special effects fail to mask the pallid direction of Brad Silberling, who makes every other shot look cheap and grainy.

Hard Times (1975) Ed Hayman "Hard Times" is a carefully detailed but pointless evocation of rootless life during the Great Depression.
Posted Sep 26, 2025Edit critic review
3/4
Boogie Nights (1997) Ed Bradley [Paul Thomas Anderson] mainly succeeds in a difficult task: to bring depth and humanity to the participants in one of the culture's most socially undersirable activities -- and without glamorizing them or it.

3/4
Spider-Man (2002) Ed Bradley The teen-angst angle, well handled by Maguire and Michigan-bred director Sam Raimi, gives the first hour of Spider-Man thematic heft without taking itself too seriously.

3.5/4
Toy Story (1995) Ed Bradley Attractive computer animation, on-target humor and well-cast celebrity voices help the comedy adventure appeal the comedy adventure appeal to grown-ups nearly as much as their kiddies.

3.5/4
Darkman (1990) Don Dahlstrom Director Sam Raimi deserves an "A" for "Darkman."
Posted Aug 27, 2025Edit critic review
At Long Last Love (1975) Ed Hayman Bogdanovich has assembled the clumsiest, most screechy and flat-voiced cast imaginable.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
Capone (1975) Ed Hayman "Capone" is little more than an excuse for a series of elaborate but not original gangland shoot-outs.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
1.5/4
Final Destination (2000) James Chesna "Final Destination" is a pretty lousy movie.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
Funny Lady (1975) Ed Hayman It fills the huge screen with color and spectacle and big-star charisma.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
3.5/4
Mission: Impossible (1996) Ed Bradley To enjoy "Mission: Impossible" is less to analyze it than to wallow in its often breakneck pace and sophisticated production values.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins (1975) Ed Hayman The photography is murky, grainy and very cheap.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
Report to the Commissioner (1975) Barry L. Green Director Milton Katselas certainly does his actors no favor.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
Shampoo (1975) Ed Hayman "Shampoo" is a solid literary conception, and a disquieting reminder of where we have been.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
Rollerball (1975) Ed Hayman "Rollerball" is skimpy fare for those for crave science fiction.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
2.5/4
Starman (1984) Don Dahlstrom "Starman" is alternately touching and thrilling.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
The Great Waldo Pepper (1975) Ed Hayman In spite of the spectacular wild-blue-yondering, "The Great Waldo Pepper" never gets off the ground.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
The Stepford Wives (1975) Ed Hayman Forbes's direction is absolutely devoid of subtlety and finesse.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
1.5/4
Explorers (1985) Don Dahlstrom "Explorers" is one of those classic cases in which the film's trailer is far superior to the film itself.
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
3/4
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) Ed Bradley "Attack of the Clones" has a lot of plot to pack into its 145 minutes, and so the film feels flat and perfunctory at times.

2/4
Supergirl (1984) Christopher Potter Despite its brisk pacing, there's something terribly forced and tired about "Supergirl."
Posted Aug 19, 2025Edit critic review
1/4
The Return of the Living Dead (1985) Christopher Potter Too grim for a satire yet too daft to be a genuine chiller, "Return" is merely gruesome; the splattery horrors are propped up by a palpable sadism that's genuinely disturbing.
Posted Aug 13, 2025Edit critic review
Braveheart (1995) Ed Bradley Braveheart has all the right ingredients for a rip-roaring saga, but Gibson overcooks the mix. The snail's-pace storytelling, overemphasis on scenery and awkward semi-mysticism scream "epic," but this film too often forgets to entertain.

1.5/4
Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) Christopher Potter It doesn't seem to resemble any other movie past or present -- which may be why it's such a god-awful thing to try and sit through.

3.5/4
Waterworld (1995) Ed Bradley Costner is an appropriately stolid hero.

3/4
Babe (1995) Ed Bradley "Babe" has a nice moral - everyone has a purpose - for the kids, but adults will like its loopy sense of humor...

2.5/4
The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) Ed Bradley The socially conscious script is a bit preachy, and the climax isn't as rewarding as the baseball-game finish of the first "Gun." But who's to quibble, when the jokes come fast and furious.

3/4
Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994) David Forsmark There is little point and no greater good served by this flick. The bottom line in judging movies like this is answering the question, "Did you laugh?" The answer is "Yes, a whole lot." Eventually.

1.5/4
Day of the Dead (1985) Christopher Potter Given all this time to conjure up the scariest epic ever made, Romero has instead pasted together a shabby, copy-cat horror show that smacks of self-parody.

3/4
Return to Oz (1985) Christopher Potter "Return to Oz" might be dismissed as a sanitized gore show, were writer-director Murch not so diabolically good at being nasty.

2.5/4
Die Another Day (2002) David Forsmark This is one of the sillier Bonds, but the actors seem to be having fun, the pace is quick, and there's a lot to look at. At least it's not a bore like Tomorrow Never Dies.

Ocean's Eleven (2001) David Forsmark A great looking film.
