Apocalypse in the Tropics (2024) Robert Roten Both Bolsonaro and Trump, and their evangelical followers have put a tremendous strain on the democratic institutions of both Brzazil and the United States. The parallels between the two are troubling.

A
Cover-Up (2025) Robert Roten The movie reveals Hersh to be a fascinating character -- a resourceful, relentless pursuer of truth. It is also an exploration of his "process" for developing news stories. Everyone who calls himself a reporter should watch this movie.

B
Weapons (2025) Robert Roten This horror film goes from being simply creepy to mysterious to fascinating as it moves along its way towards a surprising conclusion. I felt very uncomfortable watching the first part of this movie because of its creepiness, but then it got interesting.

Blue Moon (2025) Robert Roten This is a movie that is carried mainly by the masterful performance of Ethan Hawke. In fact, it is almost a one man show, but with good supporting performances by Bobby Cannavale, Margaret Qualley, Andrew Scott, Patrick Kennedy and Jonah Lees.

B
Bugonia (2025) Robert Roten The kidnapers would have been captured right away, if Fuller had LowJacked her, or if police had followed up on a rather obvious link between Gatz and Fuller's company, but they did not. This is not a believable movie, but it is good, nevertheless.

B
Mercy (2026) Robert Roten It is a good whodunit with fine performances by Chris Pratt and Kylie Rogers. The movie is ably directed by Timur Bekmambetov.

C+
Friendship (2024) Robert Roten The overall narrative of the movie, despite the humor, is a relentless downward spiral, and it left me cold.

C
The Plague (2025) Robert Roten The psychological damage caused by the cruelty of children can be tragic. This movie effectively demonstrates this cruelty and how not to deal with it. It also demonstrates betrayal of a friendship, and the emotional consequences of that.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025) Robert Roten This is a long movie at nearly two and a half hours, but it held my interest throughout because of the mystery and the talented actors who help create such fascinating characters.

B
Sorry, Baby (2025) Robert Roten This story about the emotional toll of rape approaches the trauma in an indirect and subtle, but effective, way. The acting is very strong in this movie, headed up by Victor.

B
Song Sung Blue (2025) Robert Roten What the movie does well is some well-staged musical numbers. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson prove to be very capable singers in this movie. While the movie is a downer a lot of the time, the songs are uplifting for the most part.

A
Hamnet (2025) Robert Roten This is one of the year's best movies, and is outstanding in all aspects, including costume design. This is a movie about the theater, but it isn't overly self-centered. The story is speculative history, but it is beautiful speculation.

SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) (2025) Robert Roten This is a well-rounded account of the man and his band. It includes some performance footage as well. To me, the music of Sly and the Family Stone is joyful, energetic, exciting music. It is nice to see that music still lives on in many ways.

A
The Alabama Solution (2025) Robert Roten From what is documented in this movie, it looks as though there ought to be a special place in hell for people claiming to be Christians who support and defend this prison system.

B
2000 Meters to Andriivka (2025) Robert Roten Most war movies are not realistic, but this one is brutally real because much of it comes from video cameras worn by the Ukrainian soldiers fighting entrenched Russian defenders near the small town of Andriivka in 2023.

B
Marty Supreme (2025) Robert Roten Marty is not authentic. Nevertheless, Chalamet gives a great performance, and so does Odessa A'zion, whose character, Rachel Mizler, proves to be a skilled hustler in her own right.

B
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain (2025) Robert Roten This Belgian, French, Japanese animated film follows the early development of a child from the perspective of a child better than any movie I can recall.

Train Dreams (2025) Robert Roten This film is like a quiet meditative dream with some fine cinematography by Adolpho Veloso and a fitting song by Nick Cave.

B
Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) Robert Roten The story, while not aging well, is good enough, and the visuals, especially in 3D, are spectacular. This movie is a huge spectacle, full of visual imagination and new world building.

B
KPop Demon Hunters (2025) Robert Roten This is a perfectly fine animated movie, but it is not really aimed at adults. I can't really relate to it, but it is well made, the animation is first rate and the songs are catchy.

C+
The Secret Agent (2025) Robert Roten Suspense builds in the first three-quarters of the film towards a violent confrontation, but suddenly, the dramatic brakes are applied, and it all ends in an anticlimax, almost like the director ran out of film.

B
Sentimental Value (2025) Robert Roten This movie is predictable, but there is an interesting double twist at the end. This is a well-acted movie. There is nothing much wrong with it, but it's appeal is limited because of its narrow, self-absorbed, occupation-focused subject matter.

B+
The Perfect Neighbor (2025) Robert Roten Part of the reason that documentaries have more impact than many fictional films is because of their believability. Because of how this movie is put together from so much raw footage, it has a huge emotional impact.

B+
Sirāt (2025) Robert Roten The sense of doom here comes from the land itself, where there is no water and no shelter from the elements. The vast landscapes make the humans seem tiny and helpless. They are easy prey to the whims of nature, and their own shortsightedness.

No Other Choice (2025) Robert Roten This movie is not just a story about the lengths a man will go to in order to provide for his family, but it also highlights the bleak future of manufacturing jobs in a world where human workers are being replaced by artificial intelligence and robots.

B
Presence (2024) Robert Roten Soderbergh's pacing is perfect in this movie and his camera work really helps tell this story. The acting is excellent by the entire cast. If you like ghost stories, and even if you don't, this is a good one.

B
Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5 (2025) Robert Roten This documentary shows how some countries, like the U.S. and Israel, are marching towards authoritarianism. There is some hope, according to the documentary, and that lies with the great masses of people, who may still share some common decency.

It Was Just an Accident (2025) Robert Roten There are some truly surprising twists and turns in this story. It is a wild ride and is not at all straightforward. It is a fascinating tale of psychological damage, high emotions, humanity and morality.

C+
The Running Man (2025) Robert Roten Some reasons the remake is better are a better lead actor, a better director (Edgar Wright) better visual effects, and a story about a dystopian future that now seems much closer to becoming real than it did back in 1987.

A
Code 3 (2025) Robert Roten Bureaucracy and frustrating rules of a terrible health system are highlighted here in a way that most documentaries can't touch. The story about how empathetic people overcome all this is great and the acting is superb, especially by Rainn Wilson.

Arco (2025) Robert Roten Despite this serious tale about a boy lost in time, in an adventure way over his head, this is a gentle, bittersweet story because he is surrounded by brave, good hearted characters.

Zootopia 2 (2025) Robert Roten There are numerous comical references to earlier Pixar cartoons, and current events. There are plenty of laughs for adults as well as children. It is very cleverly written and the animation is of high quality.

C
Wicked: For Good (2025) Robert Roten While I liked some parts of the conclusion of this story, I really hated some elements of it, like what happens to Nessarose, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. Some of this is just awful. It reminds me too much of current politics.

B
Predator: Badlands (2025) Robert Roten Even though there are no humans in this story, Dek and Thia are good characters. Thia is open to the wonder of this world, and remains upbeat, making her a good foil for Dek. The story is compelling and has many twists and turns.

Now You See Me: Now You Don't (2025) Robert Roten While the first sequel of the original 2012 film was inferior, this second sequel is a pure delight. As with the first two films, the story includes a setup for another sequel. I am on board with that. This is a very entertaining film.

C
Die My Love (2025) Robert Roten Jennifer Lawrence does give a great performance, but the story makes no sense. This movie reminds me of another similar fantastical movie that Lawrence starred in, "Mother!" (2017) but this one isn't nearly as good as that one was.

A
Frankenstein (2025) Robert Roten Guillermo del Toro's direction, the sets, production design by Tamara Deverell, the elaborate costumes designed by Kate Hawley, and fine acting all combine for a horror masterpiece.

B
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (2025) Robert Roten This is a look into Springsteen's soul, through the window of one specific year of his life and the songs he wrote for this album. It is also a movie that highlights Springsteen's artistic process. This movie succeeds in both these goals.

B
A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE (2025) Robert Roten The acting is first-rate in this movie. The actors do a marvelous job of showing how people might behave in a situation where there is not enough time, or enough information available to make a good decision, and all the options are bad ones.

Working Man (2019) Robert Roten Robert Jury does a great job with the setup of this movie, gradually revealing the secrets that power the movie's plot twists. It is not quite as believable and hard-edged as it might have been, but it is quite compelling and entertaining.

B
TRON: Ares (2025) Robert Roten Visually the movie is dazzling, especially in 3D -- a great conversion from 2D. The acting is good and the story is compelling. The story is relevant to current events because the U.S. is now being run by people like the Dillinger character.

C
The Long Walk (2025) Robert Roten While the movie succeeds to a limited extent, in order for a story like this to fully succeed it would have to be a lot less depressing, boring and pointless.

Eddie and the Cruisers (1983) Robert Roten Review of a disk containing Eddie and the Cruisers I and II: The music (created by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band) provides good support in both films. There is an uncanny convergence of the stories of the fictional movie band and the real one.

B
Charley Varrick (1973) Robert Roten This appears to be a low-budget movie, where dead people can be seen breathing and actors sometimes trip and stumble. Such scenes would usually be re-shot or otherwise fixed, but somehow this ends up making the movie look more realistic for the most part.

A
One Battle After Another (2025) Robert Roten There have not been many good movies in theaters lately, but finally, one has arrived. High profile director Paul Thomas Anderson has unleashed what is arguably his best film yet with this dizzying comedy adventure.

B
The Bad Guys 2 (2025) Robert Roten The story works, for the most part because the main characters are well developed and engaging. The Bad Guys, in particular, have a strong group dynamic. The ways in which they interact carry the story along.

B
The Naked Gun (2025) Robert Roten This kind of try-anything-to-make-you-laugh comedy is not easy to get right, but this movie has just the right tone. It is a combination of good writing, good acting, effective slapstick comedy and clever movie industry inside jokes.

B
The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) Robert Roten The movie works pretty well because it provides heroes you can root for and a monster villain you can root against. The visuals are good, as expected in a top level Marvel production. I think Stan Lee would have been pleased with this movie.

B
Sovereign (2025) Robert Roten Nick Offerman gives an outstanding performance as a deeply disturbed man who has lost touch with reality, and Jacob Tremblay gives a strong performance as a boy who just wants a normal life, but cannot break free of his father's corrosive influence.

B
Superman (2025) Robert Roten Director James Gunn has certainly left his fingerprints all over this film, which shares a lot with his earlier films, like the careful balance of comedy and drama and how it shows the difficulty of getting a team of headstrong heroes to work together.
