Ace in the Hole (1951) Myles Standish It is one of the most acid portrayals of savage and ruthless self-service to ever hit the screen.

North (1994) Harper Barnes While "North" is generally entertaining, it falls far short of the quality of Reiner's best work.

The American President (1995) Harper Barnes In the end, it unabashedly tries to make us feel good about our country and its political process. In these rancorous, ugly times, sentimentality about democracy, the electoral process and the Bill of Rights may be naive, but it is quite welcome.

Misery (1990) Harper Barnes This story of a write held captive by a woman who calls herself his "number one fan" delivers the goods in terms of suspense and jolts of horror. It is, however, a bit of a disappointment compared to some of the other work of director Rob Reiner.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Myles Standish Ingenious at points, but its digs at the imperfections of our Earth in contrast to other more advanced planets are more pedestrian than space borne.

Bite the Bullet (1975) Joe Pollack Plausibility is stretched to its ultimate limits, and the niceties of historical and geographical accuracy are either conveniently forgotten or deliberately muddled, but Bite the Bullet still turns out to be an agreeably entertaining motion picture.

3.5/4
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) Joe Williams It turns out that the movie is a worthy heir to the throne. The Return of the King is the darkest and richest film in the trilogy, a morally satisfying epic that redeems the adage that size equals gravity.

Stand by Me (1986) Harper Barnes As sweet, funny and painfully true as any portrait of boyhood you are likely to see on film.

Gaslight (1944) Clarissa Start Angela Lansbury, [a] 17-year-old British newcomer, is outstanding as the Cockney maid, as is Dame May Whitty as a gossipy twittery neighbor.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Joe Williams It's hard to imagine this epic story done any better. If the other two films in the series are as rich as this, they could endure as long as the books.

A Few Good Men (1992) Joe Pollack With outstanding performances throughout the cast, superb direction by Rob Reiner and a fine, taut screenplay by Aaron Sorkin, who adapted his own Broadway success, the movie marches by at double-time.

Alice in Wonderland (1951) Myles Standish Perhaps this cartoon version is closer to Walt Disney and the voices of comedians he uses for some of the characters than to Lewis Carroll. But he captures the cock-eyed spirit of the quaint characters at least.

The Princess Bride (1987) Joe Pollack The entire cast, plus Reiner, seems to be having a wonderful time, and the frivolity, nonsense and sheer joy of the experience comes through the screen in winning fashion.

Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939) Colvin McPherson Performances are exceptional.

Hook (1991) Joe Pollack The problems with Hook are many, but let's put first things first. You feel as if you'll never never get to Neverland, and once you get there, it wasn't worth the wait.

Big Top Pee-wee (1988) Ellen Futterman Unfortunately, director Randal Kleiser fails to move his characters in any imaginative directions.

Caddyshack II (1988) Joe Pollack Not much style and even less substance.
Posted Dec 14, 2025Edit critic review
True Lies (1994) Harper Barnes Outrageously entertaining.

The Abyss (1989) Joe Pollack There's just so many special effects and mechanical devices that everyone seems to have forgotten the story, and there's where movies begin.
Posted Dec 09, 2025Edit critic review
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) Harper Barnes "Terminator 2"...is packed with thrills and astonishing visual effects - there are a couple of long, winding chases... that are as exciting as any ever filmed, and this is one of the few movies worth seeing for its special effects alone.

A Christmas Carol (1984) Eric Mink This production, it turns out, is nothing short of magnificent, easily the best interpretation of the story I've ever seen.

The Wiz (1978) Joe Pollack The musical offers some brilliant song-and-dance numbers.

The Running Man (1987) Harper Barnes This movie is a farce. And a good, low farce, at that.

Predator 2 (1990) Harper Barnes "Predator 2" is another sequel that is somewhat better than the original.

Dracula (1979) Joe Pollack "Dracula" is quite entertaining.
Posted Oct 23, 2025Edit critic review
Born Yesterday (1950) Myles Standish George Cukor's direction apparently has deliberately allowed waiting periods for audience laughter after some of Miss Holliday's best lines, the first time to my knowledge this has been done on screen.

Desert Hearts (1985) Harper Barnes One of those films that may not hold together very well as drama, and a couple of times beats you into submission with clichés in the dialogue, but still has a great deal of appeal because of the sheer humanity that pours from these characters.

My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) Harper Barnes The sexuality and violence may be a little hard to take for some, but none of it is gratuitous. And all of it adds to a fine film that is complex without ever bogging down in its complexities, without ever being preachy.

Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990) Eric Mink Fails to offer much beyond a bunch of psycho-sexual babble.
Posted Oct 09, 2025Edit critic review
Stephen King's It (1990) Eric Mink For most of its four hours of airtime, "IT" is a gripping, bloody horror romp that will leave most of your major muscle groups aching from long stretches of constant tension

Mandingo (1975) Joe Pollack It is degrading in concept and execution.
Posted Oct 08, 2025Edit critic review
Tron (1982) Joe Pollack "Tron" is bolstered by some dandy computer-animation techniques... But when the characters speak, the dialogue is Disney, and it's dull.
Posted Oct 06, 2025Edit critic review
Casper (1995) Harper Barnes [Casper] has some of the feel of an old Abbott and Costello horror spoof, where the spooks are a bit scary but ultimately harmless, and where there is plenty of slapstick but mostly of a relatively gentle nature...

Hard Times (1975) Joe Pollack There are some good fight scenes, some splendid small characterizations and, all in all, a film that is a cut above the ordinary.

To Sleep With Anger (1990) Harper Barnes "To Sleep With Anger" is leisurely and bittersweet, like an extended blues song.

Spider-Man (2002) Joe Williams Spider-Man isn't a daring new approach to comic adaptations, like Tim Burton's failed Batman. Rather, by sticking close to the source, it succeeds with flying colors.

Boogie Nights (1997) Joe Holleman Anderson's greatest achievement may be that he tells a sex story without being sexy -- wholly appropriate for a business that sells the sizzle while spoiling the steak and that sometimes steals people's souls by confusion motion with emotion.

Toy Story (1995) Harper Barnes Toy Story is exciting but sweet-tempered, the kind of movie that parents and younger children can enjoy together.
Posted Sep 10, 2025Edit critic review
This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Joe Williams Reiner's directorial debut remains his best and most inventive film, a note-perfect parody of show-biz self-importance and pre-MTV production values.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Harper Barnes "This Is Spinal Tap" is a hilarious send-up of rock movies and the evolution of rock style.

Requiem for a Dream (2000) Joe Williams "Requiem for a Dream" is a daring, original and important work. But if Aronofsky could apply his dazzling techniques to a story with genuine human complexity, his films might evolve from science to art.

Pumpkinhead (1988) Harper Barnes If you are looking for gore, you are going to have trouble with Pumpkinhead because almost all the action takes place in very dim light...

High and Low (1963) Myles Standish It is like any good American or English thriller in its crackling tension, documentary realism and meticulous detail.

Babe (1995) Harper Barnes The story moves a tad slowly at times, and some younger children will probably grow restless. But then something astonishing will happen to snap them back to attention. "Babe" is a sweet, clever movie...

Waterworld (1995) Harper Barnes Costner is effective at what he does best -- playing the strong, silent type.

The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) Joe Pollack It's a perfect combination of tastelessness and hilarity, and I haven't laughed so much in a long time.

The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) Harper Barnes These characters first appeared in the short-lived but memorable Police Squad TV series and their comedic roots reach back to the original Airplane! No, The Naked Gun 2½ is not as funny as that 1980 comic tour de force, but nothing much is.

DuckTales, the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp (1990) Richard Fuller Your kids will love it. If you stick around, you should have some pleasant flashbacks to your animated childhood.
